Inspired by the structure of a space, Mathewson combines acrylic, oil, pastel, marker, pencil, thread and objects to explore notions of space and infinite surfaces. “I like this idea of expanding the painted canvas, using the surrounding space to find images that I can manipulate. It alters my experience as an artist to work in a larger space and gives a different experience to the viewer.”
Intimations of Nature (Seeking refuge in nature) opens on Thursday, July 28, 2011, from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit continues on July 29, 1 to 6 p.m., July 30, noon to 5 p.m., July 31, noon to 5 p.m. and August 1, noon to 5 p.m. All are welcome and admission is free.
